She's not delulu about a second chance — she's genuinely settled into the idea that her one big love already happened and she used up her allotment. So when the universe cracks open and offers her a do-over, her first reaction isn't swooning. It's suspicion. It's what's the catch. It's a woman who has been burned by hope deciding she's not doing that again.
For anyone who reads sci-fi romance for the feelings and stays for the world-building, this is your book. The healing arc is not a footnote. It's the plot. Jen's journey from "I laugh so I don't scream" to actually letting someone hold her is the slowest, most satisfying burn in the whole series, and Sandz refuses to rush it.
Grief doesn't make her fragile. It makes her picky. And watching a seven-foot battleship fighter realize he has to actually earn her? Chef's kiss.
The hero: emotionally constipated, devastatingly loyal
Dovanik does not smile. Ever. His whole family tree apparently agreed to scowl through several generations, and he has the frown lines to prove it. He's punctual, he's rigid, he's married to his career as a battleship fighter, and he has exactly zero idea what to do with a small mouthy human who cries in the shower and then makes a joke about it over breakfast.
He's a green flag disguised as a red one. He doesn't do declarations — he does logistics. He notices what she needs before she says it. He rearranges his entire ambition around her. If you're a girlypop who's tired of heroes who say things and never do things, Dovanik understood the assignment.

Jen and Persha's friendship in these opening chapters becomes load-bearing across a dozen more books. Read out of order and you'll still have a good time; read in order and by Book 13 you'll be emotionally invested in people you met on page four.
Fair warnings, because we don't do surprises here: this is an adults-only series with explicit content. Book 1 deals directly with bereavement, and there's recreational drug use played for comedy in the opening scene. If you're sensitive to grief content, know that it's handled with care rather than exploited — but it is present throughout.
Length-wise this is the biggest book in the series at nearly seven hundred pages, so settle in. It's doing double duty: telling one love story and building an entire universe underneath it. Worth every hour.
