Okay, content note first because we're responsible here: Dr. Ezone is the darkest book in The Deal series so far. It opens on childhood violence — a drunk father, a terrified kid under a bed — and the shadow of that never fully leaves. If you want fluff, take a different door. If you want the kind of dark alien romance that leaves marks, pull up a chair.
Octavia shows up early to prove herself and gets a whole other education
Our girl's first instinct on day one is to arrive before anyone else so the team knows she's reliable and eager to learn. Iconic. She's competent, she's warm, she pitches in the second she sees someone struggling, and she has no idea — genuinely none — what kind of attention she's just walked into.
Because the med bay she's joined belongs to Ezone. And Ezone doesn't do casual anything.
She thought she was starting a job. She was starting an obsession — and the terrifying, delicious part is that a piece of her likes it.
Why the heroine works
Octavia is not naive and she is not a doormat. She notices. She clocks the intensity, the way he watches, the way rooms rearrange themselves around him. And Sandz lets her have complicated feelings about it instead of forcing her into either terrified-victim or blindly-swooning. She's a woman working out in real time how much of this she actually wants, and where her line is, and what happens when she finds out he'd move that line for her if she asked.
Even better: she has her own people. Other women in the med bay, friendships, coworkers, an actual life outside of him. Sandz is very good at giving heroines a full social world, and it means the romance never feels like isolation.
The tropes, for the girlies who shop by trope
- Obsessive / possessive hero — and the book knows it, and says so out loud
- Morally grey love interest with a genuinely brutal backstory
- Workplace proximity, med bay edition
- Touch her and he will simply erase you
- Healer who cannot heal himself
- Dual POV so you see exactly how deep the fixation runs
The series does something clever here
In a later book, another character — Mikel, chaos incarnate, beloved — looks at Ezone and thinks the word "obsession." Out loud. On the page. Sandz builds in her own warning system, letting the wider cast react to how intense this pairing is. That's not a bug, it's the point: The Deal is a shared universe, and the friend group notices when something's off.
Spice: extremely high
This is one of the hottest books in the series and it's not close. It's devoted, hungry, and unhurried — the man treats her like a subject he intends to master. Adults only, and go in knowing it earns the "dark" label emotionally as well as physically.
Read this if…
You want spicy sci-fi romance with real teeth. If your comfort reads are the ones where the hero is a little bit wrong in the head about her and the heroine decides she can live with that — Ezone's your man. Just don't say nobody warned you.
Content warnings, properly listed
This is the book in the series that most needs them, so here they are plainly: on-page domestic violence in the hero's childhood, including a father physically assaulting both his mate and his son. Alcohol abuse. Themes of obsession and possessiveness in the central relationship. Explicit adult content throughout.
None of it is gratuitous, and none of it is romanticised at the source — the violence Ezone survived is written as a wound, not a personality upgrade. But if any of the above is a hard limit for you, pick a different door in this series. Falata and Nanko are waiting and they are much gentler company.
The verdict
If you can take it, it's one of the most compelling books in the run. Dark alien romance readers will find it genuinely satisfying rather than edgy-for-the-sake-of-it, and the med bay setting gives Sandz a great excuse to build out the medical and biological side of this universe in detail.
The darkest corner of The Deal universe. Book 3 stands alone but hits hardest if you've met Jen and Knoxy first.
