OpenAI has shipped its first piece of branded hardware, and it is not a phone or a pin — it is a $230 keyboard. The Codex Keyboard pairs a conventional typing deck with programmable keys, dials and status indicators designed for one job: managing multiple AI coding agents at once.
The pitch reflects how software development is actually changing. Engineers increasingly supervise several autonomous agents working in parallel — one writing tests, one refactoring, one investigating a bug. Alt-tabbing between terminal panes to approve, pause or redirect them is clumsy. OpenAI's answer is to give those actions dedicated physical controls, with per-agent status lights showing what each one is doing.
A niche product with a broad signal
A keyboard will not move OpenAI's revenue needle. But it plants a flag: the company that made ChatGPT wants a physical presence on the desks of the developers who build with it, and it is willing to design hardware around agentic workflows years before they are mainstream. It also lands the same week OpenAI shut down its standalone Atlas browser to concentrate on a single ChatGPT super app — subtraction in software, addition in hardware.
